Last week we had the opportunity to attend the opening event for THE FLAT. A new lounge Located at 500 South Point Drive, South Beach. The location is hidden enough to feel exclusive, yet elusive enough to feel really really über cool. From the moment you walk through the large oak double doors you begin to feel as if you’ve been transported someplace just south of wonderland. The space is small, leaving enough room for about 50 people and a Baby Grand Piano to fit comfortably. Yep, you read that right, a Baby Grand Piano. It’s white with a graffitied image of Ray Charles, colored in hues of pinks and purples. And it’s shiny.
The Baby Grand is just a piece of what makes The Flat transcend into the coolness of all things that are South of Fifth. The ambiance is dim, lit mostly by candles and a few overhead lights around the Baby Grand and the bar. It’s
set up lounge style, with numerous couches filling the space, leaving just the right amount of room for people to mosey on down to the bar. The concept his highly conceptual—the before dinner “before experience”. Situated directly across from Joe’s Stone Crab, and diagonal from the Apogee, their expected clientele is the type of person who would have a deep appreciation for a space that is private and dark, and has a penchant for Ray Charles.
The “before experience” can be defined as… Let’s say you’re meeting your friends for dinner, but they are running late. You think to yourself, I could hang out in my apartment for the next hour, or I could hop/skip/jump (remember Alice in Wonderland reference above) over to The Flat for a few cocktails. Since The Flat is known for spinning some totally awesome and inspired gin and juice, and with names like The Siberian Cup and Madame de Pompadour, we would certainly choose the latter. And we’re so glad we did.
The cocktails were complimented with Verrines (ver-eens). Which is an appetizer or desert made of components layered in a small glass. The word, originating in France, is super trendy and popping up in areas all over the culinary world. We like the fancy name, and the fancy cocktails, because both took us even further down the rabbit hole that is The Flat.
With the trendy lighting, the purplish hue, the fancy drinks and the delectable apps the night pretty much began and ended with a feeling of exclusivity. A feeling that if you look hard enough you can find your wonderland. And it might just be situated behind two very large oak doors.
You can find some cocktail images below, but just a few. Since exclusivity lies firmly in staying elusive, we’ll keep it that way… for now.
