LACOSTE + DETAILS CREATIVE INNOVATOR MARK A. REIGELMAN ART BASEL EVENT
LACOSTE celebrated Art Basel with an art installation designed specifically for its Lincoln Road boutique by artist Mark A. Reigelman II. Recipient of the LACOSTE x Details Creative Innovator title, Reigelman installed his piece, “Rockodile,” over a four day period from December 5th to December 8th. The installation, which draws its inspiration from the curious diet of American crocodiles, consists of over 5,500 black rocks suspended in the boutique’s window. Created and sourced in the US, each rock is made from 100% post-consumer materials such as DVDs and DVD cases that are shredded and cast into stone form. At night, each is illuminated by a phosphorescent green glow. Internationally recognized Brooklyn-based artist specializing in site specific product design, installations and public art has had his work displayed in exhibits, public spaces, galleries and museums across the country including the MoMa in NYC, Cleveland Museum of Art, Shanghai Museum of Glass in China, plus more. Reigelman has worked with designers such as Issac Mizrahi, GyBell, Ron Gilad, Dror, Montana Knox and Rockwell Group.
Reigelman of the inspiration behind piece:
“My research focused on American Crocodiles from their history and physical characteristics to their eating and sleeping habits. I was especially struck by one particular fact: crocodiles eat rocks! The weight of the rocks, interestingly, assists with swimming, diving and buoyancy. This contrary notion of floating rocks is the foundation of Rockodile.”
In celebration of Riegelman’s work, LACOSTE hosted two events during Art Basel: the first, a private breakfast at SOHO Beach House and the second, an in-store brunch on Sunday, December 8th to fete the complete installation of Rockodile. On Sunday, hosts Anthony Spinello, Erin Newberg and Fabian Basabe were joined in celebration by notable guests such as: Patrick McMullan, Cameron Silver, Shareff Malnik and Paulette and Martina Borgomanero. Rockodile will be installed and on display at LACOSTE Lincoln Road until December 13th.
