At popular Williamsburg restaurant The Gorbals, chef/owner Ilan Hall serves Fire-Steamed Cabbage and Smoked Lamb, a play on traditional Irish ingredients for St. Patrick’s Day. In preparing the dish, he steams cabbage on his wood-fire grill, letting it sit for an hour until it’s infused with smoky flavor. After charring the tender lamb rack alongside it, he puts the cabbage in a Ziploc bag to allow the flavors to develop and the texture to soften, and peels the burnt edges before finishing it with olive oil, salt, and lemon. Ilan also offers a Braised Lamb Neck with Oats, another riff on Irish flavors. He braises the neck in red wine until it’s soft enough to fall off the bone, and lays atop a stew of creamy white oats.
At cult-meatball destination, The Meatball Shop, co-founders Daniel Holzman and Michael Chernow serve up a mix-and-match menu of a variety of meatballs and sauces, as well as a rotating selection of seasonal sides in a warm and convivial environment. This St. Patrick’s Day, all six locations of The Meatball Shop are offering the St. Patty’s Day Ball, a special meatball made with corned beef, mashed potatoes and cabbage. Additionally, diners can order The Lucky Baller special, which includes 1 St. Patty’s Day Ball slider and 1 shot of Jameson for $5. All shops will also be offering a special of $2 Jameson shots.
