Real Life Chef Marc Forgione Cooks for Guests at “Chef” Movie Premiere
Taking note that the cooking world has become more mainstream and is moving towards pop culture, Jon Favreau took a break from creating and directing large movies like “Iron Man” to write and star in his own Tribeca Film Festival movie,”Chef” saying, “the food culture is really taking over.” At the movie premiere for his Tribeca Film Festival movie, the self-proclaimed foodie even said that he watches every episode of “Top Chef” AND chef documentaries. Who knew?!
Now that we know Jon Favreau’s interests, we understand how he chose Chef Marc Forgione’s restaurant American Cut to host his movie premiere. Marc Forgione is an outstanding chef (Iron Chef Season 3 Winner), the restaurant is in a perfect location in Tribeca (Tribeca Film Festival- hello!), and the food is phenomenal, serving contemporary steakhouse cuisine.
At the movie premiere, Chef Marc Forgione prepares a six foot Cubano sandwich inspired by the movie. To shed some light on the film and meaning behind his creation– the massive ‘Cubano sandwich,’ we will give you a little ‘taste’ of the movie concept. The movie starts when Jon Favreau’s character (Carl Casper) learns that an influential food critic is in his restaurant and wants to get creative in the kitchen. His request is turned down by restaurant owner (Dustin Hoffman) who advises to stick to the menu, resulting in a bad review. Bad Dustin Hoffman! The egotistical chef (sound familiar?) takes his anger to twitter and has a battle with the critic, leaving him without a job. Instead of seeking another executive chef position, Carl Casper decides to own and operate a food truck serving… you guessed it! Cubano sandwiches. Surprise.
Since the movie is now out in theaters, we wanted to share the behind-the-scenes footage of Jon Favreau at his premiere with co-stars John Leguizamo, Bobby Cannavale and Sophia Vergara, as well as some notable chefs (we see you David Chang). Take note of the non self-proclaimed foodie Bobby Cannavale who says in an interview on the red carpet that his favorite thing to eat on set was ‘the little meat thingy.’ Aww, you’re cute Bobby, but please don’t direct any food-related films anytime soon!
In addition to the glitzy red carpet interviews, Chef Marc Forgione serves up a story about his background with details about his humble beginnings and how his restaurant American Cut was revived during the financial crisis. We also get to see the creation of that massive sandwich, which Jon Favreau tasted and said, “that’s pretty good man, it’s really crispy on the outside.. it’s very rich.. that’s the trick to getting the pork right.” I guess he’s the pro now. We just adore you Jon.
